La Colombe – a feast for all senses

La Colombe, the fine dining restaurant at the vineyard Constantia Uitsig, is a constant on the Eat Out Top 10 Restaurants in South Africa and achieved an impressive 12th place in the San Pellegrino 50 Best Restaurants of the World Awards 2010. Eating here is a feast for all senses. The restaurant is tastefully stylish, without feeling stiff or overdone; the staff are polite and competent without being overbearing; every mouthful of the food is indulgent and interesting; and the presentation goes beyond style on the plate.

Chef Scot Kirton uses only the freshest and finest locally sourced ingredients, and his dishes are a blend of French fine dining with a touch of Asian: interesting without being too complicated. Clean and elegant is his motto. When you manage to get a reservation, be sure to go for the full tasting menu. At R850 per person including wine-pairing it is a bit on the steep side, but I assure you that you won’t be disappointed. Some of my favourites were  the Foie gras and caramelised fennel terrine, pan-fried escalope of foie gras, macadamia and  lavender crumble, sous vide smoked quail breast, rhubarb butter and lavender brioche and Smoked pork belly, braised cheek, pork croquette, pickled red cabbage, smoked mash, plums and tarragon jus. The Umami rockpool, miso-cured scallop, soy caviar, langoustine, pickled shitake, samphire, fennel and corn salad is served with a smoking pebble pool of dry ice on the table, making for a very interesting effect.
