Staycation

This weekend, the hubby and I decided to be tourists in our own town and headed to Pretoria’s Church Square. After a beer and some slaptjips (Afrikaans for french fries) at Pretoria’s oldest cafe/bar, Cafe Riche, we strolled around and did a spot of people watching. Downtown is a predominantly black area, and it has the same kind of atmosphere as the townships do: bustling and jolly with people enjoying their time off with a simple picnic in the park or some shopping at the street stalls. And, if you visit Church Square right now, you can’t really not go and look at the media circus one block away outside North Gauteng High Court where the Oscar Pistorius trial is underway.

The menu is a hotch-potch of English andAfrikaans, with some quite exotic-sounding items like "Kaas & Vars Komkommer"
