One of the things I enjoy the most about travelling is eating local specialities. Given that the Karoo produces some of the country’s (if not the world’s) best lamb, it’s a given that you will eat this in many different forms during a visit. The indigenous veld vegetation gives the meat a herbaceous flavour that makes Karoo lamb so special (authentic Karoo Lamb farmers must adhere to strict rules, read more about that here).
At the Coldstream Restaurant in the historical centre of Graaf Reinet (with a perfect view of the beautiful church) you can chose from many lamb dishes like ribs, chops and shanks. But if you want to have something really indulgent, try their Karoo Burger with bacon and blue cheese. It is a succulent lamb cutlet basted in a sweet bbq style sauce and cooked to perfection (read medium-rare). It is then smoothered in a blue cheese sauce and topped with crispy bacon and herby rocket. It is Burger Perfection.
