South African Snapshots: no 5

Nelson Mandela.

One year ago, South Africa lost her father and the world lost one of the greatest men to have ever lived. But Tata Madiba’s legacy lives on, and now it is up to us to nurture it and build upon it. He gave his whole life to the struggle for freedom, equality, democracy and peace, and even though he managed to help us towards that goal there is still a long way to go. I believe that there is but one way to honour this great man, and the sacrifices that he made; by continuing to fight his fights. These are his words, and we should all take heed:

“The truth is that we are not yet free; we have merely achieved the freedom to be free, the right not to be oppressed. We have not taken the final step of our journey, but the first step on a longer and even more difficult road. For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others. The true test of our devotion to freedom is just beginning.” 20141204-183618-66978980.jpg
