South African Snapshots: no 8

White lions.

White lions only exist in the wild in one endemic region of the world: Timbavati, a private game reserve with unfenced borders to the Kruger National Park. They are not albino, but rather the result of a recessive gene carried by some of the tawny lions in the area. The first recorded sighting of a white lion in Timbavati was in 1938, however the local tribes tell stories about them that are much, much older.
